I have read through many of these posts and am getting more concerned. My orthopedist advised I would have the Brostrom and be walking on it next day. I haven't read one post that didn't involve a hard cast for 3 weeks. Was he just blowing smoke? I certainly was feeling that 6 weeks in a walking cast and 3 in a brace and I would just be on my merry way. Now I am reconsidering.

That's insane!

No way should you be walking the day after!The shortest time I've heard of in a cast was two weeks,but 3-6 seems to be the norm.I know that Dr. Jeff here is very conservative and does 6 weeks in a hard cast.

I am getting a Brostrom done on Monday,and I'll be in a post-op splint for a week,a hard cast for 2,a walking boot for 3,and then a brace for awhile.

I wouldn't trust this doctor.My suggestion is go get a second opinion.

i think maybe one of two things happened. either your doc mispoke him/herself OR you simply misunderstood. it is a VERY easy fix.......give him/her a call and ask again.

I just had ligament and peroneal tendon repair surgery on Tuesday (still a little fuzzy on exact procedures) and I can't even imagine trying to walk. I hurts when I turn my leg the wrong way and that is only the weight of my cast. I would definitely recommend double checking with your doctor or getting another opinion.

I had a Brostrom along with a bone excision and arthroscopy on May16th. My Dr.'s protocol was a little different from the rest that I had read. I was in the surgical cast for 1 week, then into a hard cast with weight bearing for 10 days. I then continued walking in a Bledsoe boot. Believe me walking is a relative term. For me it meant getting to the bathroom and back or to the kitchen and back. We're not talking long distances. I'm now at 5 weeks post-op and can walk longer distances. I even went back to work. You learn very quickly form your own body as far as what you can and can do and how much stamiona you will or won't have! I practiced just having my leg in a normal downward sitting position and kept extending the length of time I couls last before elevating again. That made a difference since travelling in the car is a challenge at first too due to the position. At first I sat in the back seat with me leg up. I'm feeling much better these days and when I return to the Dr. on Tuesday, I'm hoping he'll give me the okay to start PT. I actually feel ready! Good luck with your surgery! smile

Hi BlueBell,

That's no very common. I'm very conservative in my post-op Brostrom care. I've had two patients who have re-injured their ankle within two weeks of getting out of a cast.

My protocol, and I'm probably the norm, is the following;

-2 weeks in a splint until the sutures are out.
-4 more weeks in a hard cast.
-3 weeks in a weight bearing walking cast
-2 months in an ankle brace.

You might want to have another talk with your surgeon.
